Baynes: The Brooklyn Born, Trinidad Raised Artist Who Is Turning the Space Between Two Worlds Into a Genre of His Own

There are artists who blend cultures. Then there are artists who are the blend. Baynes is the second kind and you can hear it in every bar, every melody and every decision he makes about how his music moves through the world.

Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Trinidad and Tobago from the age of three, Baynes grew up living between two musical worlds that most artists treat as separate. American hip-hop and Caribbean sound. East Coast rap and Soca, Calypso, Reggae, Dancehall and Afrobeats. Instead of choosing one he built something that holds all of it at once, and he gave it a name.

CALLALOO. Named after the Trinidadian dish, a leafy plant blended down into a soup with everything going into one pot. That is the sound he is building. And he is not just calling it a style or a genre influence. He is aiming to make it a genre of its own.

"Being all mixed up like Callaloo," he says. "That is my superpower."

How it all started

Baynes grew up above a bar. Every night Bob Marley, Prophet Benjamin, Vybz Kartel and Mavado filled the air from downstairs while his mother worked. He would be at the window screaming the lyrics at the top of his lungs. Music was not something he chose. It chose him before he was old enough to understand what was happening.

His older cousins, children of the 80s and 90s, had BET's 106 and Park on constantly. Chris Brown, Sean Paul, the early 2000s era of music videos. He fell in love with the visual side of music right there, a love that still drives his creative vision today.

He was writing from primary school. Entering Calypso and Soca Monarch competitions as a kid. When his mother got him a keyboard he could not put it down. He could not play a single note properly but in his head he was Beethoven. He laughs telling the story now but that unbothered confidence in his own creative world was always the signal of something real.

Eventually he started producing and recording himself on a MacBook his cousin passed down to him. That was when everything came together. He committed fully at 18, right after high school, when a friend recorded his first freestyle verse and posted it to Instagram. That was the beginning.

Discipline over motivation

One of the most revealing things Baynes says about how he operates is his relationship with motivation. Most artists talk about staying motivated like it is a feeling they chase. Baynes flipped that entirely.

"I realized I could not rely on motivation all the time so I studied how to be disciplined instead," he says. "Motivation comes and goes. Discipline shows up either way."

That mindset shift changed everything about how he works. The output stopped depending on how he felt when he woke up. The work became the standard regardless of the day. And the results speak for themselves. Two EPs in 2022. Singles building momentum. A live performance series with a second episode that just premiered on July 1st. An Instagram reel that approached one million views during Carnival season.

He also runs Inn House Studios, his own company, not a label in the traditional sense but a full operation where he is in the numbers as much as he is in the booth. He watches where people are pressing play. Which cities are pulling up. What is actually connecting. That feedback loop keeps the creative decisions sharp and intentional.

Label deals came through along the way. None of them fit. So he built his own lane and stayed on it.

The music that is moving right now

His newest single "Sunrise" is in active promotion and gaining real traction with his supporters. He is rolling it out properly, giving it the runway it deserves rather than dropping and moving on to the next thing before anyone has had a chance to sit with it.

"Callaloo" has become a fan favorite and is still climbing. The song that gave his sound its name has connected in the way only music with a real identity behind it can.

And then there is "1/2 Way Off the Porch," his live performance series filmed at local Trinidad venues. Episode 2 premiered July 1st on YouTube featuring performances of "Sunrise," "You and Me" and "Callaloo." It is a window into an artist who does not just want to be a voice on a track. He wants to be felt in a room.

West Coast collaborations with legendary artists are in motion. He is not announcing details until they are locked. But the West Coast connection is real and it is coming.

The gap he is here to bridge

At the center of everything Baynes does is a purpose that goes beyond music as a product.

"My purpose is to bridge a gap," he says. "Between the stories we share, the feelings behind them, and whoever is listening or watching. If one person finds their own way through my music, whether they are from Trinidad, Guyana, New York or Atlanta, that opens a door for the next person to walk through."

His audience already reflects that vision. The analytics show listeners in Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados and Guyana connecting as hard as fans in DC, Philly, New York and Atlanta. That crossover is not a marketing strategy. It is a natural result of an artist who genuinely lives at the intersection of both worlds and makes music that reflects that reality honestly.

Most rappers pick a lane. American or Caribbean. Baynes lives in the middle. And that is exactly where the music needs someone like him.
